what do you mean I can't be a 13 year old boy in an 80s movie who learns the meaning of friendship through a memorable summer adventure???
at least i can dress like one
Although the summer is still quite a ways away, I’ve found myself longing for those seemingly never-ending days of sun.
A lot of my best summer memories come from childhood, when I would end the day with a wrinkled shirt, grass-stained knees, and pockets filled with whatever my siblings and I uncovered that day. Part of my desired vibe for the upcoming warmer weather pulls from just that, minus the sweat stains.
To aid with the visuals are a few coming of age movies, as images of myself from that time shall not be released. (except for one at the end as a treat.)
The Sandlot (1993)
I first watched The Sandlot when I was around the age of the boys in the film, and fell in love with it instantly. It was one of the first movies that drew me in not only because of the story, a new-kid-in-town is embraced by a few ragtag boys on a baseball team where journeys ensue, but also the costuming. Even then, I was inspired enough to dig through my closet in search of a striped tee that I did not own, and beg my mother to buy me a pair of converse, as PF Flyers were too difficult to find.
The boys’ clothes are intentionally laidback and easy; their only goal is to hit the field. It’s something they aren’t afraid to get dirty in, or to sweat out. Cotton is the primary material of choice. Jersey knit striped tees, denim jeans + overalls, and the filthiest canvas sneakers you can find. Combine that with some occasional madras and a short sleeve button down and you’re set.
Accessories are sparse and practical. A belt to hold up the pants you haven’t quite grown into yet, a bandana to stop the sweat from burning your eyes, and a baseball cap to prevent said sweat from forming.

Stand by Me (1986)
Stand by Me is another movie with a similar vibe, it is also set in the early 60’s and focuses on a group of young friends. The outfit changes are much less due to the multiple day quest the boys embark on, but the same sentiment is there. The clothes are used and loved, riddled with repairs, dirt, and scuffs.
Their Boy Scout reminiscent backpacks, sleeping bags, and canteens have inspired me to spend many hours scrolling through eBay, looking at vintage Boy Scout bandanas, patches, and even bolo ties. There’s a lot of cool things out there!
And finally, as promised, me.
I was twelve here, and I remember this being one of my favorite shirts. I paired it with some hot pink athletic shorts which makes sense considering this outfit was for a walk down the road, but still a bit funny. For accessories, I have a pinback button that I made and would probably still wear, and turtle pendant necklace that I do still wear. Along with that are some rainbow loom bracelets, a watch from claires, and a giant hot pink bow headband. We also can’t ignore the zebra print flip flops and rainbow loom anklet.
All I can really say is that I was having fun and somehow, this still feels exactly like me. This was my peak and I’ve been chasing after it ever since…
