what i'm into for this fall/winter
tldr: red
To me, August=autumn and despite still having to turn on the air conditioner everyday, I am already in the fall mindset. Arguably the best season, the transitional fall weather provides so many fun layering and pattern/texture mixing opportunities that almost makes you forget how bleak the colder months can be. I am super excited to pull out some of my favorite pieces as it begins to cool down, and perhaps, acquire some new ones as well.
the color red
Red has been one of my favorite colors to wear for a little bit now and I am yet to tire of it. There is something about a bright crimson that just cuts through the doldrums and haze and reinvigorates a look. It’s the easiest color to use in order to add a pop of color, and the tones are fairly easy to match. Recently, I’ve been loving when I see a red turtleneck or something similar layered underneath another item, allowing just a bit of the color to peek through, but it’s also fun to go full monochrome and look like the little boy in The Snowy Day from time to time.

In terms of color, these looks are quite simple on their own, and would be moreso if the red tops and tights were swapped for say a black or grey. It would still work nicely, but the red is what really leaves an impact.

Definitely more of a statement, I am eager to pull off a fully red look in the near future. With most monochromatic fits, I like when a print of some sort is incorporated, it makes it a bit more palatable and easy on the eyes, if that’s something you want, of course. When looking at my closet, I’m suprised a fully red look hasn’t happened yet. My winter coat is a bright red, and I have a number of red plaid skirts and such. Maybe something will come together in due time…..
colored tights
In a few of the inspo pics I pulled above, tights are a main component of the look. Red tights have had and are having a bit of a moment, but there are even more colors to paint your legs with.

Much like the first point I made about a red top peeking from underneath another garment, colored tights can take a look from simple to striking. Tights are also great to just have for colder weather, so why not let the ones you wear be fun?
pattern mixing
A maximalist at heart, I am quite partial to a bold pattern mixing moment. My simple points for playing with prints is to keep the colors similar or contrasting, and to make note of the size of the prints you are working with. However, things could still work well if you throw those tips out the window!

Each of the example looks involve some sort of plaid or gingham because those are my personal favorite patterns, but really anything goes. It would be fun to get a patterned coat to style around each day, I’ve been on the hunt for a nice long wool plaid coat, and have found a few worthy (vintage!) candidates.
scarves and bandanas
A scarf may seem like a simple necessity of the season, but it can be a greater style component if you let it be. I have not yet found the scarf of my dreams, a red knit one of ground sweeping length, but I am continuing to scour the interweb until I do. In the meantime, I have grown fond of simply tying a bandana around my neck, often in a classic red. It fulfills both my longing for a neck accessory besides jewelry and my eternal desire to be a cowboy.

I’ve also been fiending for a good long striped scarf that looks almost cartoonish, which I love. It is actually suprisingly hard to find one with two colors and evenly spaced stripes that isn’t Harry Potter merch. I have fallen deeply in love with the pink and burgundy one from Paloma wool pictured above, so I may just bite the bullet.

When I first tried wearing a bandana around my neck, it felt a bit too 2017 influencer wearing an ACDC tee from H&M, (iykyk?) but I quickly shifted it to the opposite end of the spectrum, à la old man in a John Alexander Skelton campaign, train conductor, 1970’s girl scout uniform, and various other comparisons I got when wearing the outfit in the center.
pins
Although they aren’t exclusively a fall/winter accessory, and I certainly wear them all year round, I am very much looking forward to wearing more pins, buttons, and brooches. I rarely leave the house with a pin-less jacket, an my collection is only growing larger

Pins aren’t reserved for just clothing items either, almost all of my bags are decked out in more than one. I even bought a vintage rosette ribbon like the ones given at horse races to try and style with.

So those were just a few things you may catch me in/a few vibes you may see me channelling this fall and winter. Pretty much what I already wear, but optimized for the cold. Perhaps once fall and winter come and go, I’ll put together a sort of retrospective look at some of my favorite outfits. That is if the winter blues don’t totally zap me of all energy and creativity :p Thank you for reading! ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ
